I went into /Library/Application Support and renamed Steam to Steam.old. So then I remember I migrated data from my old Intel Mac, which had Steam on it. It translates the app for use with Apple silicon. Downloaded the Steam app and it first prompted to install Rosetta, which I did, but then the app just wouldn't open. But other things like Xenonauts (which is what kicked all this off) and Half-Life are still blocked. Rosetta works automatically in the background whenever you use an app that was built only for Mac computers with an Intel processor. While the Windows version of Steam has a higher compatibility rating than the Mac version, the M1 chip is based on ARM CPU architecture. It allows you to play Windows games on your Mac M1 with Crossover. They might have done this 2 years ago for all I know! Now I can play Magic Carpet and Fallout 2 without huge amounts of stuff-around, yay. Another option to play Windows games on a Mac is to install a Crossover application. Just by writing this post, I noticed it looks like GOG has updated the version of DOSBox they use to be 64-bit so they support ≥Catalina, that's great news. Is there a better way? I don't particularly feel committed enough to trying this out to buy Parallels outright just to tinker with some nostalgia. The best thing I can think of is to download Parallels, install the Windows 10 ARM Beta in a VM, and try running the 32-bit Windows binary through that.
